Chapter Overview

False teachers exposed and judged.

Peter warns that just as there were false prophets in Israel, there will be false teachers in the church, who secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them. Many will follow their immorality and exploit believers with deceptive words. Peter then strings together three historical examples to show that God knows how to deliver the godly and reserve the unjust for judgment: the angels who sinned and were cast into hell, the ancient world destroyed by the flood (with Noah and seven others preserved), and Sodom and Gomorrah turned to ashes (with righteous Lot rescued). Peter graphically describes the false teachers' character: presumptuous, self-willed, like irrational animals, having eyes full of adultery, promising liberty while being slaves of corruption. They are like dogs returning to their vomit and pigs to the mire — their last state worse than their first.
